HTML 5 progresses despite challenges

The new standard still faces video codec issues but could reach the candidate-recommendation phase by 2011

By Paul Krill (http://www.infoworld.com/author-bios/paul-krill) | InfoWorld (http://www.infoworld.com/)
Development of HTML 5, the highly touted upgrade to the language of the Web, is progressing but still faces obstacles, including lack of a standard video codec, said an official of the World Wide Web Consortium at a gathering on Tuesday.
Featuring video capabilities and support for offline applications and the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) specification, HTML 5 is set to move to a candidate recommendation phase in by the end of 2010. That phase would last two years before a final adoption could occur, said Philippe Le Hegaret, a W3C interaction domain leader, during a press briefing at the W3C Technical Plenary/Advisory Committee meeting in Santa Clara, Calif. W3C officials also provided updates on efforts in the mobile widget and IPv6 adoption spaces.
[ InfoWorld's Paul Krill reports that HTML 5 could kill of both Flash and Silverlight (http://www.infoworld.com/d/developer-world/html-5-could-it-kill-flash-and-silverlight-291?source=fssr). | Neil McAllister explains why HTML 5's industry fights could prevent a truly standards-based Web (http://www.infoworld.com/d/developer-world/html-5-can-center-hold-266?source=fssr). ]
"[HTML 5 presents] the next generation of being able to interact or do more with your Web applications," Le Hegaret said. HTML 5 would be supported within browsers and by application developers.
Challenges, however, include the lack of a video codec (http://www.infoworld.com/d/developer-world/browser-vendor-squabbles-cause-w3c-scrap-codec-requirement-974) in HTML 5. "The underlying issue is finding a video format that is royalty-free," said Le Hegaret. "So far, we haven't been able to provide one video format that can satisfy everyone."
MPEG-4 and Ogg have not met the royalty-free criteria, Le Hegaret explained. Fallback options could include having a developer, for example, define a page to work in the Safari and Firefox browsers and then provide two video formats, he said.
HTML 5's multimedia capabilities could give developers less reason to deploy proprietary technologies like Microsoft Silverlight or Adobe Flash, Le Hegaret acknowledged. But Le Hegaret said those technologies would remain a step ahead of HTML 5 in technical development.
Work also is being done in the accessibility space, with HTML 5 to link to the WAI-ARIA (Web Accessibility Initiative Accessible Rich Internet Applications) suite, to make Web content accessible to people with disabilities.
Le Hegaret also touted SVG (http://www.infoworld.com/d/applications/google-microsoft-support-svg-346), which provides a language for describing two-dimensional graphics and graphical applications in XML. "What we're going to see is Web applications becoming much nicer with the arrival of SVG on the Web," he said.
But Microsoft's lack of support for SVG in the Internet Explorer browser remains "the elephant in the room," Le Hegaret said. Microsoft has been a co-chair of the HTML working group and has several employees at the WC3 event, he said. Although noting Microsoft has not released its plans for the Internet Explorer 9 browser, Le Hegaret said to expect good news from the company on the SVG front.
W3C Director Tim Berners-Lee lauded HTML 5 efforts. "I think [the specification] is great," he said. But he added there is to work to do on the specification and that it must be made to work on the Web in a secure way.
With its mobile widgets initiative, efforts are afoot to address fragmentation in developing applications for the mobile space, said David Rogers, director of external relations for OMTP (http://www.omtp.org/) (Open Mobile Terminal Platform). Widgets are small Web applications considered ideal for mobile device-independence.

سلام
راستش تا اونجایی که من یادمه قرار بود HTML 4.01 آخرین نسخه این استاندارد باشه.

At this time, the W3C membership decided to stop evolving HTML and instead begin work on an XML-based equivalent, called XHTML. This effort started with a reformulation of HTML4 in XML, known as XHTML 1.0, which added no new features except the new serialization, and which was completed in 2000. After XHTML 1.0, the W3C's focus turned to making it easier for other working groups to extend XHTML, under the banner of XHTML Modularization. In parallel with this, the W3C also worked on a new language that was not compatible with the earlier HTML and XHTML languages, calling it XHTML2.

When first looking to learn web design the amount of terms you’re faced with can be daunting which is why it’s important to focus your learning on specific languages and techniques.
If you’ve been learning web design or development recently, or even if you’re a veteran of the web sector, you’re sure to have heard people mentioning HTML 5 here and there. So what is HTML 5? Well, this article is supposed to act as a what’s what of HTML 5, giving you an overview of just what HTML 5 is trying to achieve and where you can find more information on some specifics of the language.

http://webitect.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/what-is-html5.jpg (http://webitect.net/development/html-5-overview-and-resources-showcase/attachment/what-is-html5/)
What is HTML 5?
Essentially, HTML 5 is a new version of HTML / XHTML which specifically focuses on the wants and needs of web app developers. It allows developers to implement a ton of new features in the things they create, for example a lot of new drag and drop (http://decafbad.com/blog/2009/07/15/html5-drag-and-drop) functionality, new structuring elements (http://www.hagenburger.net/2009/03/html5-xhtml5-with-css-for-safari-firefox-opera-ie) as well as improved support for audio and video (http://www.reelseo.com/html-5-video-tags/).
Why has it been developed?
Up until 2004,the HTML language was developed by the World Wide Web Consortium. A lot of developers were disillusioned with the proposed improvements in the HTML language that the W3C were proposing, many feeling that they were out of touch with the needs of modern day web and app developers. A new group named WHATWG (Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group) has since taken over development of the language and has named it’s specification HTML 5.
http://webitect.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/main-features.jpg (http://webitect.net/development/html-5-overview-and-resources-showcase/attachment/main-features/)
So, what are the main features of HTML 5?
I’ve spoken about why HTML 5 is being developed, but what are the results of it? Well, let’s take a look at some of the main features that HTML 5 currently employs.
1. The video element
HTML 5 allows you to embed video with the need for third-party plug-ins or codecs, finally meaning that inserting video into a web page is a hassle free experience.
Find out more about the video element (http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/05/google-dailymotion-endorse-html-5-and-standards-based-video.ars)
2. The canvas element
In technical terms, the canvas element allows for dynamic scriptable rendering of bitmap images. In terms of the end user, it will allow the creation of things like diagrams, animations and charts / graphs. You can see an example of what can be done with canvas, even at this early stage, over at Mozilla (https://developer.mozilla.org/en/A_Basic_RayCaster).
Find out more about the canvas element (http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/html-5-canvas-the-basics/)
3. Local storage
Much like cookies, HTML 5 increases functionality for storing web based information locally on your machine. The main difference to cookie functionality being the sheer amount of data HTML 5 allows you to store, perfect for today’s modern, data dependent web applications.
Find out more about local storage in HTML 5 (http://building-iphone-apps.labs.oreilly.com/ch05.html)
4. Web workers
According to the WHATWG scope, web workers defines an API for running scripts in the background independently of any user interface scripts. Basically put, this allows for smoother running of code-heavy web pages. Inimino (http://inimino.org/%7Einimino/blog/3box_web_workers) state “a worker can be opened by the page, do work in the background without tying up the UI, and notify the page when the work is done. During this time, the page can respond to other events normally.”
Find out more about web workers (http://www.ddj.com/go-parallel/blog/archives/2009/08/web_workers_a_d.html)
As you can see from the roundup above, HTML 5 doesn’t just improve the process of creating applications, it improves the fundamental functionality of your web page by making activities smoother and more intuitive.
When can I start using HTML 5?
The basic answer, right now! Although you don’t have to begin using HTML 5 right away, some mainstream browsers are beginning to support the language in their recent releases meaning that the features above are already available for use for those using newer browsers. Deep blue sky has recently posted a great recap of browser support (http://www.deepbluesky.com/blog/-/browser-support-for-css3-and-html5_72/) for both HTML 5 and CSS3.
