Dear friend,there is no need to read a book to create a table.But after you create that table you won't stop,will you?! You will want to create PK,FK,Index then views and go on...
So I strongly recommend you to begin to read Books Online,the documents of SQL Server which is available within Installation CD. Don't be lazy on this reading.I found "Sams Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Unleashed" a useful book and of course if you want to get more in depth knowledge you must have "The Guru Guide to SQL Server Architecture and Internals " on your desk.
Personally think don't emphasize a lot on learning T-SQL and DTS(get familiar and hands on experience but no more) because these two are subject for major changes in future version of SQL Server that is 2005(By code name: Yukon).
